Project overview
The Rishworth Centre and Railway Street Retail Park form the primary retail destination for the West Yorkshire town of Dewsbury. The retail centre boasts leading brands including Aldi, Pets At Home and Iceland. Comprising of over 68,000 sq ft of retail space, The Rishworth Centre is attached to a large car park consisting of 265 spaces. With such significant footfall, real estate developers New River understood the necessity to provide accessible EV charging facilities to the growing number of drivers visiting the Dewsbury site.
Retail parks and shopping centres are key to developing the charging infrastructure in the UK as they offer the perfect location for drivers to top up whilst they shop. As the average consumer spends a few hours at a time at these destinations, a fast charging unit can almost charge an EV to full in this time window, depending on battery size.
New River contacted EVC to conduct a site survey of The Rishworth Centre. During the survey, the optimum location of EV bays were discussed and it was determined that a new point of connection would need to be established to power the EV chargers. During this process, EVC advised on the number of chargers required to service customers and visitors based on available road and footfall data.
During the consultation period, it was determined that an initial two 22kW dual outlet fast chargers would supply four EV bays, with the infrastructure in place to scale up to a total of ten EV bays as more customers make the switch to an electric vehicle. This also includes the deployment of two new dual 150kW rapid chargers which were set to be installed shortly after the initial fast charging points.
EVC completed the installation of The Rishworth Centre’s new charging points in June, and they were made available for use immediately on the public EVC network. EVC monitor the chargers remotely 24/7 and produce regular updates for New River on the performance of their new EV chargers.
