EV charging grants for UK businesses and landlords

Over 1.1 million people in the UK drive electric vehicles (EVs), and with the new Labour Government pledging to reinstate the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles back to 2030, there is a pressing need for a robust network of EV charge points across the UK.

Businesses have a crucial role in building the UK's public charging network, as EV drivers need reliable charging options both on the go and at home. Companies that fail to provide EV charging stations risk being left behind, as EV drivers are likely to favour locations that offer this essential amenity! By investing in EV charging infrastructure, businesses can attract and retain customers, demonstrating their commitment to sustainability and future-proofing their operations.

Installing EV charge points may require an initial investment, but there are government grants available that businesses can benefit from. As an OZEV-approved installer, businesses and landlords can work with EVC as their charge point operator when using these funding schemes.

We've summarised the grants available below but be sure to act quickly – the deadline to apply for any of the following grants is 31st March 2025 at 11:59pm.

Chargepoint grants for businesses:

The following grants are available to businesses to help fund the installation of EV charge points:

  • The Workplace Charging Scheme
  • The Workplace Charging Scheme for state funded education institutions
  • The chargepoint and infrastructure grant for staff and fleet

The Workplace Charging Scheme

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) supports businesses, charities, and public authorities in installing EV charging points. Eligible applicants can receive up to £350 per socket, for a maximum of 40 sockets, offering up to 75% off the cost of the total installation.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Off-street parking.
  • The workplace must have a clear business need for EV charging
  • Installations must be done by OZEV-approved installers.

If your application is successful, you will get a digital voucher to present to your chosen installer, which must be used within 180 days of the date of issue.

The Workplace Charging Scheme for state funded education institutions

The Workplace Charging Scheme for state funded education institutions provides up to 75% off the cost of buying and installing charge points, up to a maximum of £2,500 per socket. The grant can be used on a maximum of 40 sockets across all sites, which includes any applications made previously via the Workplace Charging Scheme.

Who can apply?

  • State funded schools, colleges, nurseries, and academies* based in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

(*Academy trusts can apply for up to a maximum of 40 sockets for each institution within the academy trust.)

Institutions will need to apply for the grant, and if successful will receive a voucher that is valid for 180 days from the date of issue – the installation must be completed in this time by an OZEV approved installer, like EVC.

The chargepoint and infrastructure grant for staff and fleet

Small to medium businesses with 249 or less employees can apply for the infrastructure grant for staff and fleet. This grant covers 75% of the cost of building and installation work for multiple sockets, up to a maximum of £15,000, including:

  • Up to £350 per active charge point installed
  • Up to £500 per passive charge point installed*.

Businesses can use the grant for up to 5 locations, and work must be carried out for at least 5 charge point spaces per site (including at least one active chargepoint).

*Active charge points refers to charge points that are available for use. Passive charge points refers to charge point infrastructure which has been installed, but is not yet live.

Chargepoint grants for residents and landlords:

There are also grants available for people and businesses within the residential and commercial sectors:

  • EV chargepoint grant for renters and flat owners
  • EV chargepoint grant for landlords
  • The electric vehicle infrastructure grant for landlords

EV chargepoint grant for renters and flat owners:

This grant is available to people who either own and live in a flat or rent any residential property. Successful applicants will receive 75% off the cost to buy and install a home charge point, up to a maximum of £350.

It is important to note that you can only apply for one charge point per electric vehicle/household, and you must have dedicated off-street parking. If you have previously claimed an EV charge point grant, you cannot apply for this one.

EV chargepoint grant for landlords (residential and commercial)

This is one of two grants you can get for a property you own (for both residential and commercial landlords). The EV chargepoint grant gives you 75% off the cost of buying and installing EV charge points, up to a maximum of £350 per socket.

Landlords can use this grant on up to 200 residential properties, and 100 commercial properties.

The electric vehicle infrastructure grant (residential landlords only)

Landlords who rent, lease, or manage a multi-residency property can apply for this grant to receive funding to cover the cost of the installation of charging infrastructure. This includes active charge points, and the infrastructure for future (passive) charge points.

Successful applicants can receive 75% off the cost, up to a maximum of £30,000 (depending on how many EV charging bays are to be installed). Infrastructure must be installed for a minimum of 5 charge points, with at least one active charge point initially.

The grant can be claimed for up to 30 properties per financial year.

What should I do if I am not ready to apply yet or miss the deadline?

It's not confirmed if another scheme will be introduced to help businesses fund the installation of EV charge points once the OZEV funding ends in March 2025. But not all hope is lost!

With EVC, businesses have two different funding options available – client funded and fully funded – depending on the nature of the project. To qualify for our fully funded solution, we take into consideration factors like car park location, the number of car parking spaces available, demand for charging in the area, and nearby amenities. Every site is unique, which is why we offer businesses and developments free site surveys to gain an understanding of the potential costs associated with installing EV charge points.

Should a site meet the criteria for EVC’s fully funded solution, the cost of the project will be covered by EVC. Alternatively, clients can choose to invest in their development by purchasing the charge points themselves (this is where the grants may come in handy). With both solutions, EVC provides full site management, which includes ongoing management and maintenance of the charge points. EVC handles every part of the process internally, meaning businesses can rely on the EVC team whilst they focus on their own responsibilities.
